Gmail users accuse Google of sending e-mails in their name

Some Gmail users are disturbed that Google appears to be sending e-mails using their names. The messages encourage friends of theirs not on Gmail to use Google products.

We are not only the product these days. We are also the product marketers.

Yet some Gmail users have, in recent days, become increasingly upset that Google appears to be using their names in order to sell Google products to non-Gmail users.

A Google forum discussion offers the spontaneous distaste of users who claim that Google has co-opted them as salespersons.
"STOP IT!" reads a post from someone with the handle Mrcheck. "At no point did I say it was ok for google to send email messages to my non-gmail contacts recommending they sign up for gmail."

The contents of the e-mails are reproduced on the forum. The subject line is "(My Name) wants to chat."

Cloud computing to create over 2 million jobs in India

Cloud computing will generate some 14 million new jobs worldwide by 2015, and India alone will create over 2 million, predicts a study commissioned by Microsoft and conducted by International Data Corporation (IDC).

Pointing out to a strong linkage between cloud, innovation and entrepreneurship, the study said most companies look at migration to cloud computing as a way to free up existing resources and work on more innovative projects. Freeing up budget allows organisations to shift some of their legacy work to the cloud and invest such freed budget in IT innovation that supports business innovation and in turn create new jobs.

"A common misconception is cloud computing is a job eliminator, but in truth it will be a job creator - a major one," said John F Gantz, chief research officer and senior vice-president at IDC in a statement.

The Microsoft-IDC study estimates that the revenues from cloud innovation could reach as high as $1.1 trillion a year by 2015 from $400 billion in 2011, where some $28 billion was spent worldwide on public cloud IT services (as compared to over $1.7 trillion of spending on total IT products and services industry) creating 1.5 million jobs.

The study predicts over two million jobs each to be generated in the communications and media and manufacturing sectors, followed by banking at over 1.4 million. Though there is no such break-up available for the Indian market, the footprint is expected to be more or less similar to global markets, said Ramkumar Pichai, general manager, customer and partner experience, Microsoft India.

On the security, privacy and regulatory-related concerns that prevented rapid cloud adoption, he said Microsoft offered the best in class data centre security and also flexibility to organisations to shift between private cloud, public cloud and on premises software, apart from enabling organisations inter-operate between the three.

"We at Microsoft expect cloud computing to emerge as the most disruptive force for technology industry and enable India to emerge as the global innovation hub from global services hub now, apart from helping the Indian economy grow multi-fold," he told ET.

According to the Microsoft-IDC regional forecast, the US accounted for 62% of worldwide spending for public IT cloud services last year compared to 35% of worldwide IT spending. Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), a complex mix of developed and emerging countries, has more cloud-created jobs than North America, primarily because of its workforce, which is nearly four times as large.

Coming to Asia Pacific region, the study observed that except for a few small countries that account for only about 5% of the total workforce, the region is dominated by two countries in terms of job creation - China and India.

The Windows 8 Consumer Preview is off to a hot start.

Proud parent Microsoft tweeted yesterday that 1 million copies had been downloaded since the beta hit the Web on Wednesday. The beta was released on the same day the company demoed the software at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

Windows users were clearly curious to sample the beta, especially after tasting the Developer Preview launched last September. A work-in-progress peek into Windows 8, the Developer Preview raised hackles among many who found it geared more toward touch-based tablets than desktops and laptops.

Japanese artist creates music using brain waves

Normal instruments aren't enough for musician Masaki Batoh, so the Japanese artist and therapist created a machine that can create sound from brain waves.
News of the mind-controlled skateboard spurred a rather heated discussion on Crave this week about how we could apply brain-wave-powered tech to other aspects of our lives.
Of all the things we came up with, music was not one of them. However, Japanese artist Masaki Batoh's had the wherewithal to make that connection.
Wanting to remember and help those affected by last year's Great East Japan earthquake, Batoh produced a new album, called "Brain Pulse Music," that took survivors' brain waves and turned them into music.

Batoh's instrument of choice was something called the Brain Pulse Music Machine. It consists of a modified EEG machine, which measures electrical activity in the brain, and some crazy-looking headgear mounted with sensors.

Facebook Threatens Lawsuit Against Mark Zuckerberg

Check out this funny story from The Huffington Post:
First the Winklevoss twins sued Mark Zuckerberg. Now, it looks like Facebook is poised to do the same.
Facebook is threatening to sue Mark Zuckerberg, an Israeli entrepreneur who recently changed his name from Rotem Guez to “Mark Zuckerberg,” according to Zuckerberg’s site MarkZuckerbergOfficial.com.
“No it is not a joke,” Zuckerberg wrote in an email to The Huffington Post. “I am now legally Mark Zuckerberg, and it’s for the next 7 years :) “
The twisted tale of Zuckerberg vs. Zuckerberg started after Zuckerberg, formerly Guez, launched a Like Store that sold Facebook “likes” to companies, a transaction that violates of the social networking site’s policies.
First, Zuckerberg, formerly Guez, sued Facebook over its failure to return his “hacked” profile. Next, a lawyer from Perkins Coie representing Facebook wrote a letter to Zuckerberg, then Guez, in September, warning him to “immediately stop your activities.” The lawyer asked Zuckerberg to confirm before Sept. 5, 2011 that he had “stopped and will not in the future access Facebook’s site, services, platform, or network for any reason whatsoever,” among other stipulations.
In early December, Guez claimed he officially changed his name to Mark Zuckerberg and has posted pictures of his ID card and passport to prove it. He also recorded a video that he says documents his visit to the Ministry of Home Affairs to change his name.
In an email to The Huffington Post, Zuckerberg offered the following explanation for his name change:
Facebook decided to sue me after i myself, filed a law suit against them, in Israel. i wanted that once they sue me, they’ll face suing “Mark Zuckerberg”. Facebook accused me of selling ficticious “Likes”, which is not true, our “Likes” come from real users who want to receive our content, and instead of paying us with money, they pay us with “Likes”. The idea was, if only “Mark Zuckerberg” is allowed to sell likes, then for that matter, i’m “Mark Zuckerberg”.
A week after Guez became Zuckerberg, Facebook’s lawyer followed up with another letter“demanding that you stop violating Facebook’s terms.”
“If you ignore this letter and continue your current improper conduct, Facebook will take whatever measures it believes are necessary to enforce its rights, maintain the quality of its site, and protect its users’ privacy and information,” the Perkins Coie lawyer warned.
Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
In violation of the lawyer’s mandate, Zuckerberg is still on Facebook. He has created a Facebook page titled ”I’m Mark Zuckerberg” and has shared images of himself, his personal documents, and newspaper clippings.
Zuckerberg said in an email that he thinks highly of Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook.
i think Mark Zuckerberg is a genious. i think he cares more about controlling the world and controlling our databases, than making money. Facebook and M.Z. have to understand that Facebook is not just any ordinary site it, along with Google, is the main avenue of the internet. They have to take on Google’s example, not to erase content they don’t aprove of. Google catorgorizes such content where it thinks it belongs, it doesn’t disable accounts and erase content.
Will Facebook sue Mark Zuckerberg?

YouTube Upgrades Its Android App

Youtube has just updated its Android app to version 2.3.4, and while the changes aren’t exactly groundbreaking, they do add-in some pretty useful new functionality.

Regardless of if you’re a big video watcher, or someone who’s more into uploading your own clips, there should be something in this release to catch your interest.

The introduction of a “watch later” queue brings that feature from the web-based YouTube to its mobile app. As you discover videos you’re interested in viewing, you can easily add them to your queue, and then watch them later at your leisure.

Uploaders should pay attention to the change in clip info editing features, letting you revise the metadata associated with a video while you’re still in the middle of uploading it.

Finally, the app gets a Google +1 button, giving you another tool to show your support for your favorite YouTube vids. The updated YouTube 2.3.4 is available in the Android Market now.

Lenovo aims to maintain profit margins

Lenovo Group Ltd, the world's No.2 PC brand, aims to maintain its gross profit margin in coming quarters despite floods in Thailand disrupting hard disk drive supplies, its chief financial officer said.

"We said that we would be able to source enough hard drives to meet customer demand. I think that remains the case. Obviously there will be some cost implications, especially in the balance of supply and demand," Wong Wai Ming told the Reuters China Investment Summit.

Floods in Thailand have killed at least 562 people since late July, causing billions of dollars in damage and disrupting international supply chains for industries such as PCs and autos.

In the second quarter ending September, Lenovo's gross profit margin was 12.2 per cent, easing from 12.5 percent in the first quarter, but up from 10.3 per cent a year earlier, company data showed.

"We definitely want to hold if not improve our gross margin," he said in Hong Kong. "We will try to manage the cost situation on one hand and are very confident that we will outgrow the market. At the same time we will make sure that it will not have a significant impact on profitability."

He said Lenovo aimed to improve its net operating margin from over 2 per cent currently.

"I think there is obviously room for us to grow it to 3 or 4 per cent over time," he said, but declined to provide a specific timeframe.

Earlier in the month, Lenovo posted its best quarterly profit in more than two years, helped by acquisitions and growth in sales in emerging markets such as China.
